Privacy Policy for Webpage to Markdown
Last Updated: May 21, 2025
Thank you for using Webpage to Markdown (the "Extension"). This Privacy Policy describes how Webpage to Markdown ("we," "us," or "our") collects, uses, and shares information in connection with your use of the Extension.
1. Information We Collect
We are committed to transparency regarding the data our Extension handles.
-
Data You Provide Directly:
- We do not collect any personal information that you directly provide.
-
Data Collected Automatically (through Extension Functionality):
- Webpage Content: To perform its core function, the Extension accesses the HTML content of the active webpage when you explicitly initiate a conversion by clicking the extension icon and then the "Convert to Markdown" button. This webpage content is processed locally on your device.
- Usage Data: We do not automatically collect detailed usage data such as features used or frequency of use for tracking purposes. The extension only processes data when you actively use it.
- Technical Data: We do not automatically collect technical data such as your browser type, extension version, or operating system for tracking or storage on our servers. Such information may be inherently part of the Chrome extension environment but is not actively collected or stored by us.
-
Data Accessed by the Extension:
- To provide its functionality, the Extension requires access to the content of your currently active tab (
activeTab
permission) and the ability to run a script (scripting
permission) to retrieve this content. This data (the HTML of the webpage) is processed locally on your device to convert it into Markdown format. It is not transmitted to or stored on our servers.
- The Extension also uses the
clipboardWrite
permission to allow you to copy the generated Markdown to your clipboard. This action is initiated by you clicking the "Copy Markdown" button.
2. How We Use Your Information
We use the information we collect (specifically, the webpage content) solely for the following purpose:
- To provide, maintain, and improve the core functionality of the Extension, which is to convert the HTML content of the current webpage into Markdown format locally on your device.
- To enable you to copy the converted Markdown to your clipboard.
We do not use your information for any other purposes, such as tracking, analytics (beyond what may be anonymously aggregated by the Chrome Web Store itself, over which we have no control), or advertising.
3. How We Share Your Information
We do not sell your personal information.
- No Sharing with Third Parties: We do not share the webpage content you process or any other personal information with any third-party service providers or other entities. All processing occurs locally on your device.
- For Legal Reasons: We may disclose information if required to do so by law or in response to valid requests by public authorities (e.g., a court or a government agency), although given the local nature of data processing, the scope of such disclosure would be inherently limited.
- To Protect Our Rights: We may disclose information if we believe it is necessary to investigate, prevent, or take action regarding potential violations of our policies, suspected fraud, or situations involving potential threats to the safety of any person and illegal activities, or as evidence in litigation in which we are involved.
4. Data Storage and Security
- Data Storage: All data processed by the Extension (i.e., webpage content and generated Markdown) is handled locally on your device. This data is not transmitted to or stored on our servers. The Markdown output is temporarily held within the extension's popup for you to view and copy.
- Data Security: We rely on the security measures provided by your browser and operating system for data processed locally. As no data is transmitted to or stored by us, the primary security concern relates to your own device security.
5. Your Choices and Rights
- You can choose not to use the Extension if you do not agree with these terms.
- You can disable or uninstall the Extension at any time through your browser's extension management page.
- Since we do not store your personal information, rights such as access, correction, or deletion are generally not applicable in the traditional sense. The data (webpage content) is sourced from your active tab and processed ephemerally by the extension.
6. Children's Privacy
Our Extension is not intended for use by children under the age of 13 (or a higher age threshold where applicable). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. As the extension processes content locally and does not collect user-identifying information, this risk is minimized.
7. Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of any changes by updating the "Last Updated" date at the top of this Privacy Policy. You are advised to review this Privacy Policy periodically for any changes. These changes are effective immediately after they are posted.
